The water beneath the Sahara
The IAEA describes the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System as the world’s largest fossil groundwater aquifer, a vast reserve of ancient water beneath parts of northeast Africa. This is regional background on the desert’s groundwater; fossil groundwater is a finite resource that needs thoughtful use.
